Lydia Paine

Research for the collection uncovered my grandparents' skills in knitting, smocking and cobbling and inspired me to aim to create a collection with a deeper, sustainable bond between people and their material things. Mother & Mode is a collection made up of slow fashion pieces, designed to slow down the pace of consumption through emphasis on craft and high quality, designed with longevity and versatility in mind. Silhouettes were inspired by the comforts of home, with a focus on trans-seasonal timeless pieces.

This collection is a poignant reflection upon family, family history and crafts passed down through generations. Its slow-fashion pieces speak of fragments of memories and handmade processes, as a counter to over-consumption. Combined with natural fibres and timeless silhouettes, this collection challenges the users’ relationship with clothing through an exploration on how emotional connection can lead to garment longevity.

Lydia currently works in design at Kate Sylvester and graduated with a Bachelor of Design with honours from Massey University. Lydia Paine will feature in the Graduate Show.
