To me, the most fulfilling element of design is the problem-solving and hands-on experience of creating, then seeing these explorations materialised. I was born into a whānau of curious makers and feel an inherent desire to create and tell stories through design. Observing and experiencing the colours, textures and forms in the natural world influence my creativity. I strive to design valued pieces, with respect and consideration for humanity and our world. Self-discovery and connecting to Te Ao Māori are important aspects of my current journey as a creative. Considering the relationship between emotions, fabric and form, this collection explores the relationship between the tangible and intangible. It is intended to be both a texturally immersive and visually tactile experience for the maker, wearer and audience. What is the emotion behind the sensation, and how can this exist in a fashion context? Fabric exists in its own space around the wearer, how these garments are worn and perceived is a combination of the wearer's choice and the fabrics desire, how they can co-exist. "I imagine these pieces as garments during the process of dress or undressing. On the body they are garments, hugging and draping off the form. When taken off, they lose their specific design, move freely, and drape intuitively. I imagine them hung over a chair or left clumsily on the floor.”
Taylor is a graduate of Otago Polytechnic Te Pūnga and will feature in the Graduate Show.
