TOMS - The One for One movement lands at New Zealand Fashion Week
New Zealand Fashion Week is thrilled to have giving company, TOMS, on board for their first NZ Fashion Week! We love fashion with purpose and TOMS’ collections of shoes and eyewear give back to those in need around the world, through their One for One movement - for every pair of shoes purchased, TOMS will give a new pair of shoes to a child in need. TOMS is in business to help improve lives and their One for One movement has changed the lives of millions of people around the world and counting. We are excited to introduce you to their meaningful work and the latest collection of shoes and eyewear in New Zealand.
TOMS was founded in 2006 by American traveller, Blake Mycoskie, who was inspired during a trip to Argentina where he witnessed the hardships faced by children in local villages with no shoes to protect their feet. Blake turned to the traditional Argentine alpargata shoe as a simple, yet revolutionary solution. From there he created TOMS, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One.
What began as a simple idea has evolved into a powerful business model helping address need, and also advance health, education and economic opportunity for children and their communities around the world. Realising that the One for One model could serve other global needs, Blake launched TOMS Eyewear in 2011 to help restore sight to people in need with every purchase of sunglasses and optical frames. In 2014, TOMS Roasting Co. launched with the mission to provide jobs and clean water to developing countries with the purchase of premium coffee. TOMS Bags launched in early 2015, addressing the issue of maternal health worldwide. With every TOMS bag purchased, TOMS will help provide a safe birth for a mother and baby in need.
During its first year in business in 2006, TOMS sold 10,000 pairs of shoes. Blake returned to Argentina later that year with family and friends and gave back to the children who had first inspired him. TOMS has now given over 45 million pairs of new shoes to children in need. TOMS works with more than 100 Giving Partners around the world where partners provide health, education or community development programs to help improve the future of children, their families and communities in need. TOMS has evolved its giving to include different types of Giving Shoes based on terrain and season and to create local jobs by producing shoes in countries where TOMS give. TOMS ensures all their giving is sustainable by working with communities in a way that will enable the community to meet its own needs in the future.
